Oaks Blokes Social at Hattusa

Help us celebrate the running of the first Boston Marathon on this day in 1897, now the oldest annual marathon race (thought we should get a running reference in here somewhere);  also Jayne Mansfield's birthday.  I leave it to you to decide which was the more significant event.  But we could drink to both.

Screenshot 2017-09-19 13.07.00.png

Deal:  22 quid per head, includes:  hot and cold meze followed by mixed grill comprising Lamb shish, lamb chops, adana, chicken kofte, chicken shish, chicken wings served with rice and salad, PLUS your first beer, and tip.  Subsequent beers / wine / raki you buy yourself from the bar.

Vegetarian option available, but you must let me know in advance.

Payment:  22 sovs, to Dom, in advance (he promises not to leave the country).  No payment, no place at the table.  You can give him cash if you see me at a run, or transfer to:

Account name:  D Haslam
Sortcode:  40-47-83
Account number:  60380547
Reference: your name (please be specific - 'Dave' doesn't quite nail it)

This way settling the bill is easy and there are no issues about who had what or who left having forgotten to pay!

We need a minimum of 30 to reserve the whole bar area upstairs, if fewer we will have a long L-shaped table by the bar.  I suspect if there is anyone else in that area they will leave quite quickly anyway.

Please let me know asap if you will be able to come.  Those who have already done so via WhatsApp do not need to say it again - just send the money!

Hope you can join us!

Easter Saturday run

Easter Saturday run

Dear Gents

Easter is here - so apart from being busy and think about eating loads of chocolate … we also think of the new born lambs, mostly because they will be well tasty in 6 months time.

So whilst they are all new and cute etc I thought we would go on the running version of an Easter egg hunt and that is the Easter Lamb hunt. Now we are a little earlier than usual this year  and I can not guarantee close sighting but their were definitely some last weekend. So lets get into the Easter spirit’ish - with a lamb run by and coffee. No it may be better than that really ….. we may even see a bunny !!!

However, as it is Easter and I suspect many of you will be on limited freedom, rather than going away this week, we are going to be back at home 8am Hollybush.

Anyway, plenty of slow groups this week like last week - so don't hold back in coming due to unfitness or recent slovenliness.

See you Saturday... Dave

Something different....

Dear Gents

Something very different this week - with Duncan not recovered yet and Gerry unavailable, I am back organising a session.

This one is going to be something very different - A rest based strength session - in doors
No running ability needed and all fitness levels welcome - ie it is open to ANYONE (really any member is welcome)

There is only one criteria - You must be willing to ache, 24 - 48 hours after.
There were a few moans about my last session - I don't think this will be as hard but I think you will ache more !!!

So there is the hard sell
No need to dress for wet or cold this week as we are in doors. I will meet you in Hollybush at 7.30pm and will jog gently over to the studio (300 meters) where you will be suitably entertained.

This is a one off session as the studio  is not being used this week - Those of you who have heard Rene moaning about his aches will get a chance to see what he is talking about. This sort of stuff is great for improving your running and preventing running injury too.

Come and give it a go - It will be fun

Best wishes

David

Away Run from The Plough - Ivy Hatch

This Saturday is an away run. We meet at 8am in the car park of the Plough pub at Ivy Hatch - This is actually less than 10 min drive from Hollybush. There will be at least 3 groups possibly more, out this weekend. Duncan is not back yet following is Operation

We might have two slower groups this week with our very own Nordic Navigator taking one and Ian with the Back to Running group. This is venue is ok for those doing a kids hand over just make sure you let us know at the start, you need to be back by 9am. If we get late Sam says she will start the SLJ 9.15am group with a 10 min loop in the town centre to give you time to make it.

I have confirmed coffee but NO SARNIES (sorry) with the pub but if you want bacon sarnies the cook arrives at 10am - so you might get lucky.

So for those who have not done this one before there are 3 beautiful routes through some of the finest countryside in Kent from here - not much in the way of any hills, the only ‘Basted' you will see is the village - if we do that route. Off road shoes if you have them follow the recent rain, I suspect - although it may be cold enough to freeze...

Saturday Away Run - Otford

We are on an away run this Saturday starting at Otford Rec - 8am.

Map link HERE

They sadly only offer the first 1 hour parking free in the Rec Car Park so it may be sensible to bring 50p with you to extend this to 2 hours (£1 for 3hrs to have all the time for a lot of extra coffee – I will try and pack lots of change !!)

This is only 5 min drive from Hollybush Rec, so those that need to be back by 9.15 am to meet (take handovers of) the kids can still do so. Just make sure you let the coach know at the start and we will get you back in time. If you need a lift let me know and I can sort it – please email me or text if it is last minute.

Good coffee and bacon sandwiches at the Pond View Cafe after - for those that can stop.

This is a Wednesday evening (so you'll have to miss the run that night!).

We will be at St Julian’s Private Members Club (as we were last year). I very much hope you have enjoyed the previous Christmas meals we have organised and will be joining us again - We hope to do our best to ensure this will be the evening you remember most over the Christmas period.

We meet there from 7.30 pm and will be sat down by 8.15pm latest. We can do the standard shared taxi arrangement for going home (although I am not organising that part) in due course.

Saturday Away run 8am - Kemsing

We will meet in village car park, next to the Church, just 50m down the road from "The Bell" pub.

The route is suitable for all, and the coaches will do our best to look after you all, and the route allows us to get us all back to the Bell Pub, where we have organised breakfast. This is one of our better venues in terms of food, service & hospitality, as those that have been before will remember.

Make sure you allow, enough time to get to Kemsing, from where you live. If anyone wants to run from Sevenoaks, then it's a good 3 mile warm up.

So see you all there

Teal Cafe away run

Teal Cafe away run

This is a treat - we are on an away run from the Teal Cafe. For a few weeks, we have conducted research of the premises and eaten there - The food and the coffee is great and Kate the owner looks after us well.

So the venue is the motel / cafe at Morley’s round-a-bout at the bottom of Riverhill  - I will be there to meet you and show you where they want us to park ’the far bit if possible'...

The run to go with it, is also something rather enjoyable too!

Some of you may remember the last time we were here and what we did - don't worry;

1. The Oaks Blokes Bastard - also know as the 'Col de Larmes’ The run is about 15 min all up and really tough in this weather  - This is NOT currently planned - Unless Paul says it is too easy, again !!

2. Planned - A flat run that takes in Underiver and the flat area beyond - we have done some of this area before so you know I am not exaggerating when I say it is flat. This run is perfect for everyone - there has been very little rain recently so it should not be too wet - But we do have a bit of a hill at the start.

But if you want to work a bit harder followed by a chatty run, tell me at the start.

And dont forget the lovely cafe afterwards. (under 5 min drive  from Holybush) - so we can get you back for 9.15am if you need to hand over. Note the SLJ girls are also running from here.

If you want a lift send me an email or whatsapp

Pink Week

Pink Week

This week is our annual PINK WEEK run in support of the Brest Cancer Care charity. I know you have all been very supportive before and I hope you will continue to support this very worthy cause again this year - Sadly we all probably know someone close who has suffered and we are heading towards the age where the risks increase for our family and friends.

In simple terms this week we start at Hollybush as a normal home run (with some pink on) and at the end of the run we finish at the Vine Coffee shop - where I believe we will get free coffee ? But I hope you will put a donation into the pot instead. The girls don't leave to 9.30 am so easy for kid hand over. You may wish to park up by the vine and walk down to Hollybush to the start of the run.

If you want to bring someone else along to support the charity and run with us please do - plenty of space on Lars's “Special” group and Fallen and Leaning Oaks !!!

So in abbreviated style ...

  • Meet Holybush 8am
  • Wear PINK something or buy a Pink T shirt £5 (get there 10 min early if you are buying)
  • All speeds and attitudes catered for (except stroppy!)
  • We end at the VINE for coffee and possible photo
  • The women are warming up at the Vine before their run so don not leave until 10.30 and get back at 10.40
  • Drink coffee, eat cake, talk rubbish
  • Go home

Many thanks, Dave

Weald away run

We are away this Saturday 5th Oct - We will be starting from the Village Green in Weald Village. I have not completely decided which route we will take, but the most likely one is rather more gentle on the hills than you will be used to. It tends to be rolling rather than up and down (I know I am likely to have that quoted back to me on Sat, but that is my recollection of it !).

Wednesday night run from Bucks Head, Godden Green

To take advantage of summer nights, this week we are doing an away run starting at Bucks Head, Godden Green at 7.30pm.

Lots of options to run from here, so run will be a combination of footpaths, tracks, trails & local minor roads.

Weather is expected to be dry and a lovely warm 20C, so you'll need some water for after run, followed by further well earned fluids from the pub.

If you don't normally come Wed evenings, give it a try, but it will be at least 5 miles, and warm. If however you can't make the run, why not join us for a pint.

See you there

Run then rugby from the Rugby Club

This Saturdays 8am run, will be (slightly) away and start from Sevenoaks Rugby Club (end of Plymouth Drive, Sevenoaks, at 8am on 24th June 2017. Duncan, Richard & Lars available, so would aim to start off all together, then split up depending on numbers, abilities, fitness and hangovers, so the run will be suitable for all.

With the British Lions playing the All Blacks, at 8.35am, for those that are interested in watching the match, whilst they might miss the first 30 minutes, they can enjoy the rest of the game, with a tea, coffee or beer if you're really up for it in the Rugby Club Bar. We have spoken to the manager, who has confirmed we can park there free and get bacon butties afterwards if you want.

Parking will be in Rugby Club Car park free of charge.

Away Run above Shoreham (from 7 Diner)

Dear Gents

I went out to look at this run today in preparation for Saturday's run. Despite the passing of the bluebells, it was beautiful. Cool dappled sunlight coming through to light attractive tracks in classic English woodland. A perfect choice for a warm summers day run and it is going to be hot and sunning on Saturday - so a great day to join us.

We start as previously at the 7 Diner up opposite Fort Halstead at 8am.

What will you get ....

  • 5.4 miles of pure magic - so not long. There is only one hard hill so nothing more than normal.
  • A short version that is about 4.2 miles - the same route with short cuts.
  • Some of the best countryside in Kent - Great Views, lovely woods and rolling hills (in the distance - I wouldn’t make you run up any would I?)
  • We pass by the Cross at Shoreham and may drop into the village to run along the river Darenth if you want a bit extra
  • A full range of coffee and dining available at the end

This is another one you will be sorry if you miss.

Best wishes ... David
